Febrile Neutropenia in Cancer Patient: Epidemiology, Microbiology, Pathophysiology and Management

چکیده
Febrile neutropenia (FN) is characterized by a decrease in neutrophils number to values below 500 cells/ mm3 and an occurrence of fever higher or similar to38.3oC. It commonly occurs in cancer patients as a result of chemotherapy regimens. Chemotherapy destroys carcinogenic cells but also attacks in many cases some normal cells including essential elements of the immune system. Fever is one of the characteristic symptoms of FN and is usually associated with the presence of an infection caused by various microorganisms.

متن کاملManagement of the febrile neutropenic cancer patient: lessons from 40 years of study.
Almost forty years ago the relationship between the circulating neutrophil count and the risk of pyogenic infection was established. Since that time, through the vehicle of clinical trials, much has been learnt about the etiologies, risk factors, pathogenesis, and natural history of first and subsequent febrile neutropenic episodes. Refinements to the empirical antibacterial management has redu...
متن کاملComparing the Efficacy of Ceftazidime and Meropenem in Treatment of Febrile Neutropenia in Pediatric Patients with Cancer
Abstract Background In cancer patients, various infections were developed due to severe neutropenia resulted from chemotherapy. Ceftazidime is commonly used as monotherapy of cancer patients with fever and neutropenia. Meropenem is a new carbapenem with more extended antibacterial spectrum including anaerobes. It provides better coverage against gram positives. This trial compared the efficac...
متن کاملAssessment of procalcitonin as a diagnostic marker of infection in pediatrics with cancer complicated by fever and neutropenia
Background: Febrile neutropenia is still one of the most important complications of treatment in cancer patients. These patients become prone to infection and consequently higher mortality and morbidity. This study aimed to determine the accuracy of serum procalcitonin (PCT) level in the detection of infection in pediatric cancer patients complicated with febrile neutropenia. Materials and Met...
